An Israeli study concludes that aspirin may have a positive effect in the fight against the corona virus. Previously, studies had shown that aspirin appeared to be helpful in preventing and treating corona infection.

People who take aspirin appear to have a significantly lower risk of contracting the coronavirus. In addition, the well-known drug is also said to be able to prevent severe courses of the disease and reduce hospitalization by two to three days. The active ingredient acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) should actually reduce the risk of infection with corona, according to a recent study. This is the conclusion of Israeli scientists from Leumit Health Services, Bar-Ilan University and Barzilai Medical Center, who analyzed data from 10,477 patients. The results of the study have now been published in the medical journal “The FEBS Journal” (FEBS – Federation of European Biochemical Societies). The analyzed data came from people who had been tested for the coronavirus during the period from February 1, 2020 to June 30, 2020. Among other things, the researchers found that people who had regularly taken aspirin to prevent cardiovascular disease had a 29 percent lower risk of contracting the coronavirus. From the researchers’ perspective, the number of people infected was “significantly lower” when taking aspirin. In addition, hospital stays would have been two to three days longer in patients not taking aspirin.
The researchers make clear that the use of low-dose aspirin for corona infection is still preliminary but “very promising,” said Eli Magen of Barzilai Medical Center, who led the study. Study participant Eugene Merzon of Leumit Health Services now wants to examine the study results in a larger number of patients, including patients from other hospitals and other countries. Already before positive message had given over Aspirin in connection with the Coronavirus. Already one year ago US-researchers of the University of Maryland in Baltimore had published a study in the technical periodical “Anesthesia & Anelgesia”. These had also confirmed a positive influence of aspirin in the course of a Covid 19 disease. In this case it was about the effect in diseased persons. At that time, the researchers had found that patients treated with aspirin were less likely to be admitted to intensive care and also required less artificial respiration. However, this study was a retrospective study that analysed the course of disease in 500 patients. The course of disease was milder in patients treated with aspirin. For a clinical trial, however, the group would have had to be specifically selected.

Numerous other studies have shown that aspirin also helps fight off viral infections. For this reason, the effect against RNA viruses, which include the coronavirus, is also not surprising, he said. Aspirin was also used against the Spanish flu a good 100 years ago. The active ingredient ASA has been around since 1897 and is currently prescribed for pain and flu-like infections. It has both antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, aspirin is also used as a blood thinner because the active ingredient prevents platelets from clumping together. This probably accounts for its effect against the coronavirus, because thrombosis often occurs in a severe course of the disease, which can apparently be prevented by the use of Apsirin. However, aspirin should not be taken for a long period of time without medical advice.
